Our History
The Systems Optimization Laboratory (SOL) at Stanford University is a renowned research group specializing in large-scale mathematical programming and optimization. Over the years, it has been home to many leading experts, including Michael Saunders, a key contributor to the field.
Prof. Michael Saunders earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford in 1972 under the supervision of Gene Golub. After a brief period at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in New Zealand, he returned to Stanford in 1979, joining the Operations Research Department, which later became the Department of Management Science and Engineering. As a core member of SOL, he has developed mathematical methods and software for large-scale optimization and linear systems, co-developing widely used solvers such as MINOS, SNOPT, and LSQR.
His contributions to SOL and the broader field of optimization have been widely recognized, with over 100 scientific papers and prestigious awards, including the Beale-Orchard-Hays Prize and SIAM Fellowship. His work continues to shape the development of optimization tools used in academia and industry worldwide.
